Master of Arts in English and Film Studies (Major Research Paper Option)

Program Overview

Laurier’s Master of Arts (MA) in English and Film Studies offers courses and faculty expertise in literature and global cultures, film and media studies, and professional skills. You'll develop your understanding of the discipline, and improve your critical thinking and communication skills through analysis and research.

Program Highlights

  • Our students speak highly of faculty engagement, the tight-knit student community, and our caring teacher/student environment.
  • Students gain invaluable teaching experience as tutorial leaders in our first-year courses.
  • Students can curate the MA to match their interests and career goals (coursework only, research option or professional skills option).

The department offers graduate courses in both English Literature and Film Studies. Each student has the flexibility to choose an area of concentration: either a single focus on English literature or film, or a combined focus on English Literature and Film Studies. Students undertaking the Major Research Paper option also have the opportunity to customize their degree work according to their area of interest under the close supervision of one of our dedicated faculty members. Students undertaking the Professional Skills Option have the opportunity to apply the skills and knowledge acquired during coursework in professional working environments engaged with literature or film.

Major Research Paper Option
Master’s students in English and Film Studies who choose the Major Research Paper (MRP) option are required to take EN600: Research Methods, Theory and Professional Issues), six half-credit courses, and EN695 (Major Research Paper).

  • The Major Research Paper (EN695) is shorter than a thesis (40-50 pp.) and provides a well-researched analysis of a research question that offers an incisive perspective on material in the discipline of English and/or Film Studies.
  • Successful completion of the MRP is equivalent to a one-term course: 0.5 credit.
  • Students interested in writing an MRP must approach a faculty member with expertise in the relevant area to discuss the possibility of supervision by Oct. 1 with a preliminary draft of the MRP proposal. If the potential supervisor feels that the project is viable and agrees to supervise the project, he/she will notify the Graduate Coordinator by email.
  • Proposals for Major Research Papers are due to the potential supervisor on the Monday after Reading Week (one week from Thanksgiving); the final draft of the proposal is due to the Graduate Studies Committee no later than the second Monday after Reading Week and are subject to its approval.
    • The proposal should present a clearly defined topic and research question in 500 words, and include primary materials to be studied, and a minimum of six secondary sources/theorists.
    • Approval of the MRP proposal will be based on originality, research work already completed, feasibility of the project, and the quality of writing.
  • The graduate coordinator will inform the student about the decision of the Graduate Studies Committee in writing by Nov 17. Note: Proposals are not automatically approved.
  • There is no oral defence associated with this MRP; the paper is supervised and graded by a single professor with expertise in the area of focus. Should students fail to submit a passing MRP by Aug. 1, they must then complete the degree through course work.
  • Unlike a Directed Study (EN690), in which students meet weekly with a professor, the MRP (EN695) relies more heavily on independent research and writing.
