Program Overview

The Master of Predictive Analytics addresses the growing demand for data scientists who have the right blend of technical and analytical skills to meet the challenge of big data analytics. It is currently the only master degree course in predictive analytics in Australia.

It is a multidisciplinary degree, in which you can choose from four majors to learn about specific application domains. It introduces advanced skills in data management, mining and visualisation, decision methods and predictive analytics, with a focus on their applications to different disciplines, such as engineering, networking, business and finance.

You will have opportunities to work on industry-sponsored projects, and participate in Curtin partnerships through Innovation Central Perth and the Curtin Institute for Data Science.

Upon completion of this course, you will be well placed to handle the ‘big data’ issues of the future, understand how to overlay historical and prediction data with production, financial and other data and correlate probability assessments to make better informed decisions.

Major: Finance and Investment Analytics
The Finance and Investment Analytics Major provides students with the ability to develop predictive models for purposes of formulating appropriate investment strategies. The Major focuses on the nexus between data analytics, economic modelling and the operations of financial markets. While the emergence of "big data" means a great amount of information are available to investors and regulators, their usefulness remains elusive. The main issue is that the extraction of this information from such large scale data and their translation to useful insight for decision making requires seamless integration of computer programming, statistics, econometrics and a thorough understanding of the operations of our economies and financial markets. This course is designed to fill this gap by providing students with a broad scope of skills covering these diverse areas in an integrated manner. After completing the first year of Master of Predictive Analytics or Graduate Diploma in Predictive Analytics, students would possess broad skills in data security, data management and predictive analytics. In this one year major, the first semester will be dedicated to the understanding of financial market operations, investment strategies, economic and econometric modelling and the roles that data analytics plays in this area. In the second semester, students will dive deeper into the connection between machine learning and modern econometrics. There will also be an opportunity for students to sharpen their skills and understanding by completing an industry-inspired project.

Demonstrate competence in both financial theory and analytics practice to develop predictive models to formulate effective investment strategies

Scholarship benefits
AAS are offered for the minimum period necessary for the individual to complete the academic program specified by the Australian higher education institution, including any preparatory training. The following benefits generally apply:

Full tuition fees.
Return air travel—payment of a single return, economy class airfare to and from Australia, via the most direct route.
Establishment allowance—a once only payment of AUD$5,000 as a contribution towards as accommodation expenses, text books, study materials.
Contribution to Living Expenses (CLE) is a fortnightly contribution to basic living expenses paid at a rate determined by Australian Government. From 1 January 2015, CLE payable to Scholars studying under an AAS is AUD$30,000 per year.
Introductory Academic Program (IAP)—a compulsory 4-6 week program prior to the commencement of formal academic studies covering information on life and study in Australia.
Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the duration of the award (for award holder only)—provided to cover the student's basic medical costs (with the exception of pre existing conditions).
Pre-course English (PCE) fees—if deemed necessary PCE may be available for students for in-country and/or in-Australia training.
Supplementary Academic Support may be available to ensure a Scholar's academic success or enhance their academic experience.
Fieldwork (for research students only)—may be available for eligible research students for one return economy class airfare via the most direct route to their country of citizenship or within Australia.

Work Permit

Students who have completed their studies in Australia can apply for a Post Study Work Permit or a Temporary Graduate Visa (subclass 485) to continue working in Australia post the completion of their study programs. As an international student, one can apply for the visa but not later than six months after completing your course. But to be eligible, you must meet the Australian Study Requirements, which include a minimum of 16 months of stay in Australia and a completing 92 weeks of a course registered on the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS).
