Program Overview

Diploma of Information Technology

Our Diploma of Information Technology is an 8-unit course taught over two or three trimesters. It has been designed as a pathway to a Bachelor of Information Technology (Business Information Systems) degree for domestic and international students. It will also equip you with an AQF Level 5 qualification, which helps you launch a career in a variety of IT areas with confidence, or improve your employability for career advancement opportunities.

This course is suited to you if you:

  • Don't have the desired results to gain entry to a Bachelor of Information Technology degree
  • Launch a career in a variety of IT areas with a nationally recognised qualification
  • Improve your employability to advance your career

Upon successful completion of this course, you will receive an AQF Level 5 qualification. You’ll be guaranteed entry into the second year of a Bachelor of Information Technology degree at Murdoch University.

Leading to: Bachelor of Information Technology
If you love the idea of a career in computing, artificial intelligence and machine learning, software development, games and game engine development, virtual and augmented reality or information systems, this is the qualification you need.

Designed by world-class academics in close consultation with industry advisors, this course offers you an excellent step toward launching your career.

In this course, you will learn to solve complex real-world IT problems and you will explore the theory, methods and systems used in the information technology industry, from mobile apps and virtual reality, artificial intelligence and machine learning, practical software engineering to corporate website architecture and global information systems.

You can choose a double major within this IT course or combine this course with another major or degree to specialise in two areas of study, giving you a competitive edge. For example, you might choose to add a business or a law degree to this Bachelor of Information Technology degree. The course structure would enable you to acquire strong analytical, research, design and technology skills combined with a very strong background in software design and programming.

Major: Cyber Security and Forensics
Cybercrime has quickly risen to become a top-level national security priority across the globe. Increasing the security of data, as well as reducing the impact of a network or database security breach, are the key challenges for IT security specialists.

In this degree, you’ll gain a solid foundation of the theoretical and practical aspects of different dimensions of cyber security, such as network security, software security, system security measures and models, information security, computer forensics, penetration testing, and vulnerability assessment.

You’ll learn how to forensically examine digital evidence, identify and respond to threats and information security incidents, and develop digital forensic and critical thinking skills to solve computer crime.

In the final year of your degree, you’ll take part in a professional practice project unit. This will include working in a team with other students and consulting with real clients to recommend, develop and implement new technologies to solve business problems.

To broaden your skills and career opportunities, you could study this major alongside another Bachelor of Information Technology major. You could also enhance your future prospects with great scholarships like the $15,000 Westpac Young Technologists Scholarship Program. This scholarship can lead to networking opportunities with industry professionals and career opportunities before you graduate.
