Certificate in CNC Machinist Technician

Program Overview

The Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Machinist certificate program provides the skills and knowledge needed to excel in machining and manufacturing. This one-year program trains you in conventional machining operations, including the use of drill presses, lathes, milling machines, and grinding equipment.

In addition to machining fundamentals, you will also gain hands-on experience in CNC programming, setup, and operation, ensuring you are prepared for modern machining environments. You will receive introductory training in CAD/CAM software, as well as inspection and quality control techniques to ensure precision and accuracy in manufacturing processes.

Graduates of this program are prepared for expanding CNC machinist career opportunities in various shops or supply companies. After graduation, you may be eligible to challenge the first-year apprenticeship exam for the Machinist program.

What You Will Learn

Students of the Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Machinist program will learn the safe operation of machine tools to create and modify precision parts from materials such as metals and plastics. You will acquire trade specific skills in programming, setup and operation of computer-controlled machine tools and manual machine tools.

Additionally, you will learn:

  • Proper interpretation of engineering drawings and CAD/CAM (computer aided design/computer aided manufacturing)
  • CNC set up and programming
  • Inspection of completed parts using precision measuring equipment
  • Safe use of cutting and noncutting hand tools
  • Equipment calibration and maintenance

A graduate with a CNC Machinist certificate can challenge the machinist apprenticeship first period exam. This program has both fall and winter intakes.

What to expect

  • During the first semester of the CNC Machinist certificate, you will receive training on manual and CNC machines such as lathes, milling machines, drill presses and grinders.
  • In the second semester, you will receive training on the operation, set up and programming of CNC turning and milling centres as well as CAD/CAM
  • The final component is a seven-week work placement, which gives you an opportunity to apply your skills and knowledge in an industrial setting by working in a machine shop.

Is this program for you?
To be successful as a machinist, you must have:

  • Good hand-working skills
  • Good problem-solving capabilities
  • Mechanical inclination
  • Basic competence in math
  • A mature attitude towards learning and work
