SMSU’s Bachelor of Science in Agronomy prepares students for successful professional careers in agriculture and related science. Increasing global food/fuel demands have created a real need for technologically-advanced crop production systems that are profitable and environmentally sustainable. SMSU’s Agronomy Program emphasizes a balanced and interdisciplinary curriculum to meet environmental and economic needs of the future. Agronomy students will study topics designed for modern agriculture including natural science, crop production, soil fertility, Arc GIS, precision agriculture and pest management. Internships and participation in SMSU’s undergraduate research conference create opportunities for agronomy students to have hands-on experience and skill-building in experimental design.

Career Opportunities
SMSU’s BS in Agronomy provides pathways for rewarding careers in the agriculture and food industries. Former students are gainfully employed in permanent positions such as crop consultants, crop insurance adjusters, graduate school researchers, Agronomists, farm managers, and conservation officers. Graduates with an Agronomy BS are in very high demand by employers.
Optional Practical Training or OPT is a period during which students, who have completed their degrees in the USA, are permitted to work for one year on a student visa by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). OPT allows students to work for up to 3 years and develop real-world skills to survive in the competitive jobs market.
It is temporary employment for a period of 12-months that is directly related to the major area of study of an F-1 student. Eligible students have the option to apply for OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies and/or after completing their academic studies.
