In this 3-semester course, you’ll explore critical issues in educational practice, policy and research strengthening your professional learning, and enhancing you career pathway.

As part of the course core, you’ll complete a research-based project in addition to units such as Introduction to Research for Educators, Workplace Policy and Practice, and Pathways to Understanding Education.

Major: Teaching Mathematics

In this major, you’ll explore areas that are intimately related to years 7-10 mathematics curriculum, using university-level mathematical tools.

You’ll learn a range of topics including linear and non-linear functions, such as polynomials, sinusoidal and exponentials; geometry involving ideas of congruence; and transformation, trigonometry, measurement of areas and volumes, and probability and basic statistics.

You’ll gain an in-depth understanding of mathematics to enable you to develop skills that are crucial for effective teaching including constructing mathematical explanations and arguments; examining definitions of common mathematical terms, interpreting terminology and notation; expanding the range of representation of mathematical ideas by drawing helpful diagrams, developing familiarity of the close relationship between algebra and numbers; studying statements of theorems and developing some skills and knowledge of proving some of them and examining typical secondary school mathematical problems, students’ errors and misconceptions.
