Master of Philosophy (Arts and Social Sciences) in Global and First Nations Studies

Program Overview

The Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences of UNSW Sydney offers the opportunity to gain valuable interdisciplinary research training that meets the needs of twenty-first-century researchers and leaders of society. It consists of three compulsory courses and a 25,000 word research thesis supervised by our academic experts. You will  complete 1 common compulsory course, 1 specialisation-specific course and 1 discipline-specific course, each focusing on research training from broad, foundational work through trans-disciplinary study to specialisation. The different MPhil specialisations provide grounding in fields that are unlike traditional “majors”. Instead they are closely aligned with the Faculty’s diverse research strengths, the expertise of its staff, and the employment market. The program is especially suited to individuals with an undergraduate degree who wish to return from the workforce to develop research skills and explore contemporary problems from cross-disciplinary points of view. Successful completion of the degree may qualify for admission to doctoral level research.

Specialisation: Global and First Nations Studies
The increasing pace of interactions in the global sphere prompt critical inquiries into human society and culture. How do we understand identity, time and place? What is the nature of power and how it is exercised? How do we learn from knowledges and experiences of first nations peoples? Our appreciation of these questions is enhanced by bringing together multifocal theoretical and methodological approaches drawing from historical, literary, subaltern, anthropological, and sociological disciplines. This specialization will develop your skills in cross-cultural inquiry through engagement with multiple narratives and voices.
