Master of Philosophy (Arts and Social Sciences) in Knowledges and Ethical Practices

Program Overview

The Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences of UNSW Sydney offers the opportunity to gain valuable interdisciplinary research training that meets the needs of twenty-first-century researchers and leaders of society. It consists of three compulsory courses and a 25,000 word research thesis supervised by our academic experts. You will  complete 1 common compulsory course, 1 specialisation-specific course and 1 discipline-specific course, each focusing on research training from broad, foundational work through trans-disciplinary study to specialisation. The different MPhil specialisations provide grounding in fields that are unlike traditional “majors”. Instead they are closely aligned with the Faculty’s diverse research strengths, the expertise of its staff, and the employment market. The program is especially suited to individuals with an undergraduate degree who wish to return from the workforce to develop research skills and explore contemporary problems from cross-disciplinary points of view. Successful completion of the degree may qualify for admission to doctoral level research.

Specialisation: Knowledges and Ethical Practices
Discerning knowledge and sound ethical practices underpin quality research. In a global context with a rapidly increasing incorporation of technology in everyday and specialist contexts research needs to be inclusive and culturally sensitive. What are the fundamental assumptions and approaches in different fields? How do we generate new knowledge through rigorous, ethical, and interdisciplinary research design? This specialisation will equip you  with an understanding of the fundamental questions raised within the Humanities and Social Sciences about knowledges and ethical practices.  It will provide you with conceptual tools to question epistemologies and methods of inquiry.  It will also equip you with skills to design and conduct responsible research.
