Certificate in Personal Support Worker

Program Overview

Humber’s Personal Support Worker certificate program gives you the skills you need for an in-demand career. Personal support workers play an especially important role in supporting the health-care team in long-term care, hospitals, home care and community health-care organizations. They contribute to the overall well-being and quality of life of their clients.

Students will learn to safely assist with personal care, mobility, emotional support and, in some cases, household management for individuals across the lifespan. Additionally, students will learn to recognize the physical and emotional changes of aging and illness while supporting clients to maximize their independence.

With state-of-the-art facilities, committed professors and valuable work-integrated learning, Humber students have a competitive edge.

Start - Completion Timeline

January - students beginning their studies in January complete the program in two consecutive academic semesters. (January through to end of August)

May - students beginning their studies in May complete the program in two consecutive academic semesters. (May through to end of December)

September - students beginning their studies in September, complete the program in two consecutive academic semesters. (September through to end of April)

Work-Integrated Learning
Throughout the program, students will participate in 300 hours of field experience. In Semester 1, students learn and practise important personal support worker skills in Humber’s simulation learning lab and apartment. In Semester 2, students complete two unpaid field experiences in Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).

Two unpaid field experiences allow you to gain valuable hands on practical and professional skills which will serve you well in your career. Beginning the first week of January, the Semester 2 field experience is divided into two rotations over 13 weeks: 160 hours in a long-term care (LTC) facility and 120 hours in a community agency. Hours and number of days per week vary depending on the type of facility and shifts assigned; most range from seven to eight hours per day or evening. The long-term care experience is fully supervised in the LTC centre. During the community experience, students have field advisors who visit on a regular basis to support student learning.
