Want to make a difference in the world? Prepare yourself with the knowledge and training you need to work for positive social change. As a sociology major, you’ll study how humans relate to one another and why they thrive and flounder in different societies. By learning to ask important questions about human behavior, social inequalities, and institutional structures, you’ll develop the skills to solve problems, embrace diversity, and think globally.
Suffolk underscores the importance of real-world experience. In addition to your coursework, as a junior and senior you'll have the chance to engage in practicums to conduct fieldwork and help underserved segments of the population. Our well-connected faculty help students obtain internships at a wide range of Boston-area sites, including local courts, youth services centers, schools, law firms, hospitals, crisis centers, social service providers, and shelters.
We are all exposed to a mass culture that demeans communities of color, immigrants, poor families, women, LGBTQ+ individuals, and others. Rather than waiting for crises to occur, sociologists seek to understand, and change, the social forces that lead to systematic and interpersonal oppression. With this major, you can help make this change, too

Optional Practical Training or OPT is a period during which students, who have completed their degrees in the USA, are permitted to work for one year on a student visa by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). OPT allows students to work for up to 3 years and develop real-world skills to survive in the competitive jobs market.
It is temporary employment for a period of 12-months that is directly related to the major area of study of an F-1 student. Eligible students have the option to apply for OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies and/or after completing their academic studies.
A student can participate in three types of Optional Practical Training (OPT):
