Program Overview

The Master Qualifying Program (MQP) is a one-semester non-award program designed for students who already have a tertiary qualification but who do not qualify for direct entry into a Master’s degree at Curtin University. The emphasis is on developing the skills necessary to succeed in postgraduate-level studies.

The Master of Arts is ideal if you want to extend your skills and critical capacity in one of its discipline areas, add a new area of expertise to your repertoire, or if you are new to the arts and are looking for a career change.

The course is hands-on with a strong practical, industry and arts community focus, preparing you for a career in creative and professional practice. You will be taught by industry and academic experts who will pass on their insights and experience, and connect you to relevant industries and creative communities.

As part of this course you will undertake a major supervised creative project, which can become an important piece in your professional portfolio.

You will apply your practical skills and develop your networks by undertaking a professional placement with an industry organisation. You will also have an opportunity to engage with award-winning artists, writers and researchers through our on-campus residency programs.

Major : Screen Arts
The Screen Arts major is an excellent springboard for a career in the film, television and media industries, combining practical production skills with creative and analytical thinking.

You will focus on film and television production, screenwriting, or screen studies; and work intensively with professional-level equipment in a challenging, creative environment. In your second year, you’ll undertake a major project and may have an opportunity to practice your skills and develop your portfolio through an internship with a professional organisation.

Understand the discipline of a selected field in the Arts, its theoretical underpinnings, ways of thinking and professional or creative approaches; understand and apply established knowledge, principles, and professional or creative practices in chosen aspects of the Arts
Apply logical and rational processes to analyse the components of a subject or project and engage critically with the subject matter to respond creatively within a selected communication paradigm
Determine what information is needed and where it might be found using appropriate technologies; make valid judgements and synthesise information from a range of sources and apply best practice in developing a professional or creative work in response to a particular situation
Communicate appropriately with colleagues, professional and creative contacts and the general public and develop communication skills across one or more media forms appropriate to varying situations
Assess the application of existing technologies as well as the impact of emerging technologies on a selected communication or media discipline to create an effective professional or creative work; develop the technology skills necessary for obtaining, assessing and representing relevant information. Decide on appropriate applications and systems for professional and/or creative needs
Understand and apply a range of learning strategies; take responsibility for one's own learning and development; sustain intellectual curiosity and develop a commitment to professional research, publication or performance to engage with emerging forms of theory and practice in the Arts
Think globally and consider issues from a variety of perspectives and apply relevant international standards, tools and practices to one’s professional or creative practice
Acknowledge the interrelationship between local, national, and global perspectives and the impact of these the Arts: recognise individual human rights, and appreciate the importance of cultural diversity and the sensitivities which may be created when engaging with and representing issues pertaining to ethnic and community groups
Demonstrate professional behaviour and standards and work collaboratively to apply them in all aspects of creative practice and production-related activities.

Scholarships

High Achiever Scholarship

Covers 15% of any study period when achieved a 70% CWA.

This scholarship is only for international students. It will not extend to your first year at Curtin University.

Terms and Conditions:

This Scholarship is for full fee-paying, non-sponsored international students.
This Scholarship is only for international students at Curtin College. It excludes students enrolled in the Masters Qualifying Program (MQP).
This Scholarship is available to students who are packaged with Curtin University.
The Scholarship amount cannot be withdrawn by the student.
This Scholarship covers a maximum of 15% off the tuition fee for the subsequent Curtin College study period when you have achieved a minimum study period weighted average of 70% in your current study period and enrolled in a full-time study load for the current study period according to your study plan.
You are required to pay the full tuition fee amount stated on your Letter of Offer and student invoice, the amount of the scholarship will be credited as a refund in your student account if you have deemed eligible by the Curtin College Scholarship Committee.
You will not be eligible for the Scholarship if you are in receipt of any other scholarship/bursary/ sponsorship from Curtin College, Curtin University or any other third party. The scholarship can be revoked at the discretion of the College if you already have a scholarship or sponsorship.
This Scholarship is not transferable or refundable.
The Scholarship must be taken up in the calendar year for which they are offered.
This Scholarship can be revoked if you do not accept your Letter of Offer or enrol into your Curtin College and Curtin University course by the dates specified in your Letter of Offer.
The Scholarship will not be extended beyond its prescribed duration or amount unless notified otherwise by the College.
Curtin College reserves the right to vary or add to any of these terms and conditions at its discretion with adequate notice.

To retain the scholarship:

If you apply for Deferral, you will not be eligible for the scholarship upon your return.
If you withdraw, defer or are terminated from your course, you will not be eligible for the continuation of the scholarship.
To retain eligibility for the Scholarship (unless there are exceptional circumstances), you must remain enrolled in your initial course at Curtin College and Curtin University (with the exception of your major) according to your study plan and maintain a study period weight average of 65% and pass all units attempted.
You must remain enrolled as an international student for the duration of the Scholarship. If your citizenship changes during the Scholarship period, the Scholarship will only be applied to the units you completed as an international student.
You must enrol in all units each period according to your approved study plan. which constitutes a maximum of four (4) units of study or a minimum of three (3) units of study.
You must not breach the scholarship terms and conditions outlined in this document.
You must comply with all other College rules and regulations.

Progression Scholarship :

CU will give 20% for the entire duratin of the course if achieved 70% CWA. (Undergraduate or Master by coursework).

Work Permit

Students who have completed their studies in Australia can apply for a Post Study Work Permit or a Temporary Graduate Visa (subclass 485) to continue working in Australia post the completion of their study programs. As an international student, one can apply for the visa but not later than six months after completing your course. But to be eligible, you must meet the Australian Study Requirements, which include a minimum of 16 months of stay in Australia and a completing 92 weeks of a course registered on the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS).
