Program Overview

The Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering offers the Doctor of Philosophy in Industrial and Systems Engineering. In addition, the Department offers the Master of Science in Industrial and Systems Engineering with both thesis and non-thesis options.The M.S. (thesis option) is a research-oriented degree and serves to prepare students for positions in industry or government or for further graduate study in industrial and systems engineering or related areas.The M.S. (non-thesis option) is designed to prepare students for positions in business and industry that require a graduate education.

Industrial Systems Concentration (SYS)

This concentration prepares students for general Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) work. It is designed to allow the student a high degree of flexibility in selecting a program that meets his/her needs. For example, the student might choose to specialize in one or more areas of ISE (e.g., quality engineering) or choose a very broad program covering several ISE fields.

Academic Scholarships

Scholarship Information: The General Scholarship Application (GSA) opens on October 1st. The priority date for entering freshmen to submit the GSA is December 1st. The priority date for transfers is March 1st.For most academic, leadership and service scholarships students will need to maintain a 3.0*.

GPA requirements for maintaining MSU scholarships are based on eligibility according to specific scholarship awards, details, and requirements stated by each individual scholarship.

Work Permit

PGWP

Optional Practical Training or OPT is a period during which students, who have completed their degrees in the USA, are permitted to work for one year on a student visa by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). OPT allows students to work for up to 3 years and develop real-world skills to survive in the competitive jobs market.

It is temporary employment for a period of 12-months that is directly related to the major area of study of an F-1 student. Eligible students have the option to apply for OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies and/or after completing their academic studies.

A student can participate in three types of Optional Practical Training (OPT):

Pre-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment provided to F-1 students before completion of their course of study.
Post-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment available to F-1 students after completing their course of study.
24 Month STEM Extension: Students enrolled in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) courses can a 24-month extension after their initial Post-Completion OPT authorization.
