Bachelor of Arts in Arts Education, with Concentration in Music Education

Program Overview

The Arts Education Program is designed to prepare teachers of Arts Education for K-12 schools and alternate educational settings. Students are required to take a core of interdisciplinary Arts Education courses as well as courses in Dance, Drama, Literature, Music, Visual Arts, and Creative Technologies In addition, students will select an arts area of concentration as part of their program. Field experiences in K-12 Schools occur in each year of the program.

Music Education - Concentration
Music Education in the Arts Education Program prepares students to teach music in K-12 general classroom settings. Experiential learning is highlighted in music education courses, as students:

  • Develop reading and composition skills in music
  • Develop listening, singing and conducting skills
  • Learn to play and improvise on a variety of musical instruments
  • Study and apply music education philosophies and teaching strategies (examples include Orff, Kodaly, and Drumming Circles)
  • Explore and utilize a wide variety of music education resources
  • Develop thematic planning skills and the ability to integrate music within all strands of the Arts Education curriculum

Students pursuing a career as a secondary band or choral teacher are advised to also investigate learning opportunities within the Bachelor of Music Education program.
