Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology (STEM)

Program Overview

The kinesiology major is focused on improving the health of individuals and communities through exercise. Our curriculum builds on foundational knowledge and theory in topics of exercise physiology, biomechanics, motor control and exercise psychology.

Our classroom experience is grounded in themes of evidence-based practice, professional skill-building and community engagement.

Courses often incorporate assessments and activities that have our students applying their knowledge of theory to the greater Seattle community, and in ways that improve health and health promotion.

Empowering leadership through exercise is central to the kinesiology degree. We look to help our students focus on the positive impact that exercise can have on the whole person.

As a result of our efforts and our active student club, Seattle University has recently earned the title of an Exercise is Medicine campus by the American College of Sports Medicine.

Learning Goals

Kinesiology?students should be able to:

Synthesize and critically evaluate scientific literature to apply evidence-based knowledge and practice across multiple disciplines, as it pertains to human movement, function, and performance.
Effectively communicate, in written and oral formats, kinesiology concepts to people from a wide range of backgrounds.
Demonstrate competency in practical and scientific application of exercise principles and foundations
Promote professional behavior consistent with discipline, including 1) an understanding of the societal and individual importance of a healthy, active lifestyle, 2) adherence to professional ethics, 3) service to others, 4) shared responsibility and successful collaboration with peers, and 5) commitment to lifelong learning

Scholarships

$11500 for UG and Early Career MBA $7,500 and for all other PG program $3,000.

Work Permit

PGWP

Optional Practical Training or OPT is a period during which students, who have completed their degrees in the USA, are permitted to work for one year on a student visa by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). OPT allows students to work for up to 3 years and develop real-world skills to survive in the competitive jobs market.

It is temporary employment for a period of 12-months that is directly related to the major area of study of an F-1 student. Eligible students have the option to apply for OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies and/or after completing their academic studies.

A student can participate in three types of Optional Practical Training (OPT):

Pre-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment provided to F-1 students before completion of their course of study.
Post-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment available to F-1 students after completing their course of study.
24 Month STEM Extension: Students enrolled in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) courses can a 24-month extension after their initial Post-Completion OPT authorization.
