Graduate Certificate in Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Program Overview

This graduate certificate program is designed for the practising Medical Radiation Technologist in the Nuclear Medicine, Radiography or Radiation Therapy or Ultrasound disciplines, who wishes to expand his/her career to include Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).  Graduates of this program will be prepared to write the MRI National Certification Examination as set by the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT).

The Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technologist is a valuable member of the health care team who utilizes strong magnetic fields and radio frequency pulses to produce high quality images to support the diagnoses of disease and injury.  Through their knowledge of cross-sectional Anatomy, MR equipment, scanning protocols, patient screening, and other MRI safety concerns, the MRI Technologist produces these high quality images of the patient in a variety of different planes.  Exceptional patient care and communication skills are required to work in this environment.

The format of the program is designed to meet the needs of the practising professional by combining face-to-face contact one day per week with online learning activities.  The didactic component of the program will be comprised of two 16 week levels. Following completion of the first two didactic levels, the student will commence an 18 week clinical practicum at an affiliated hospital site.  The clinical practicum will be concluded with an intensive consolidation and review on campus, to prepare the student for their certification exams.
By delivering this MRI program in a hybrid face-to-face/online format, students will be able to maintain their employment where they are providing key diagnostic services, while enhancing their ability to serve their community's needs with expanded career potential as future MRI Technologists.

Learning Outcomes

  • The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to :
  • Perform, in accordance with current standards, various magnetic resonance imaging procedures involving the head and neck, spine, chest, abdomen and pelvis, as well as the musculoskeletal and vascular systems.
  • Apply the theoretical concepts of physics to the work required in the delivery of MRI services.
  • Ensure the safety of clients and staff when delivering MRI services.
  • Interact effectively with the clients and their families.
  • Prepare and position the client according to the established protocol, in order to optimize image quality.
  • Use the MRI equipment, accessories and software efficiently.
  • Assess the client's condition during the diagnostic test and/or the procedure and intervene effectively, if necessary.
  • Apply the theoretical concepts of anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology to the work required in the delivery of MRI services.
  • Efficiently transfer and store images, using the various media available (PACS, film, CDs, hard drive).
  • Work with the various members of the health care team: radiologists and other physicians, physicists, nursing staff and other health professionals.
  • Perform duties professionally and as a member of a health care team.
  • Evaluate MRI system performance, using quality control procedures.
