As a law and economics major at CMU, you’ll learn to think critically about complicated situations and gauge how others are likely to react.
This unique program is one of just a handful in the United States. If you want to go to law school, you'll get reasoning and argumentation skills you'll draw on for years to come. And you'll get a broad overview of individual rights and our legal systems that complement work in many other disciplines.
Classes in economic theory will contribute to your analytical and decision making skills. Business law courses will expose you to basic legal concepts, such as contracts and property rights, various issues in discrimination, and regulatory environment of business. Beyond that, have the freedom to take courses in other areas that interest you. (A variation of this program is also offered through our College of Business Administration. Students in that program take more required business courses, and take fewer elective classes.)
Graduates of CMU's law and economics program are problem-solvers and solution-finders. You'll become a better writer and thinker—skills that will serve you well in law, business or countless other careers.

Optional Practical Training or OPT is a period during which students, who have completed their degrees in the USA, are permitted to work for one year on a student visa by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). OPT allows students to work for up to 3 years and develop real-world skills to survive in the competitive jobs market.
It is temporary employment for a period of 12-months that is directly related to the major area of study of an F-1 student. Eligible students have the option to apply for OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies and/or after completing their academic studies.
