Northeastern's M.A. in English offers advanced courses in a variety of fields for current high school teachers, those preparing for Ph.D. programs, or others seeking to improve their skills in reading, writing, and critical analysis.
COMPOSITION CONCENTRATION
As the Master’s degree is understood to build upon an already solid foundation of study, applicants seeking admission to the MA program in English, Composition concentration, must have a BA in English, English Education, or a related field subject to the approval of the Graduate Committee in Composition. Students who do not meet these requirements may be offered a provisional admission and allowed to complete their undergraduate training at NEIU prior to taking courses toward the MA degree.

Current high-school teachers completing the M.A. in English deepen their knowledge of content, re-engage their writing and critical thinking skills, and update their own courses to include current developments in theory and pedagogy.
Those pursuing a Ph.D. to teach at the college level gain rigorous experience in current research methods, theory and writing, with some using their graduate theses at Northeastern to launch their future dissertation.
More generally, the M.A. in English at Northeastern provides students with advanced skills in critical analysis, written and oral presentation, research and editing that have prepared them for jobs in areas such as:
Optional Practical Training or OPT is a period during which students, who have completed their degrees in the USA, are permitted to work for one year on a student visa by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). OPT allows students to work for up to 3 years and develop real-world skills to survive in the competitive jobs market.
It is temporary employment for a period of 12-months that is directly related to the major area of study of an F-1 student. Eligible students have the option to apply for OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies and/or after completing their academic studies.
A student can participate in three types of Optional Practical Training (OPT):
