The University of Tasmania is home to the fourth oldest law schools in Australia, a testament to our enduring legacy of academic excellence. We have a proud history of shaping legal minds and contributing to legal progress. In fact, we rank above the world standard in research in both quality and volume. This means you’ll learn under the guidance of nationally and internationally recognised academics, several of whom have authored the textbooks used in Law classes across Australia.
The boutique size of the Law School fosters a personalised and supportive learning environment. Here, each student receives individual attention, and learning goes beyond the classroom with our inclusive and thriving student culture and social life. From your first year, your learning is enriched by interacting with the most senior of academic staff. With us, your Law School experience is a blend of academic rigour, practical knowledge and professional networking, laying a strong foundation for a successful career.
Your Law degree flows to the Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice – the ticket to admission to the practise of law – taught face-to-face by judges, magistrates, barristers and solicitors – in Tasmania and elsewhere.
We're committed to ensuring that our graduates are prepared for legal practice and that they view the law, not as an end in itself, but as a vehicle for creating a fairer society in Tasmania, Australia and globally.
Studying with us, you receive more than an in-depth knowledge of the law. The law school is closely connected to the Tasmanian legal community and our network of alumni. With opportunities to connect with the judiciary, senior practitioners, leaders from government and key legal institutions. You’ll develop all the practical skills to become a successful practitioner, whether that’s in law, business, government, or the community sector.
Our island location as Australia’s Antarctic and marine gateway provides ideal opportunities to learn from our leaders in Environmental, Antarctic, Marine and Climate Law. You'll also get the chance to learn from experienced practitioners across specialist areas of law such as International Humanitarian Law and Health Care Law. Throughout your degree you will have opportunities to design an elective program that suits your interests and career aspirations.
After successfully completing the Bachelor of Laws, you can apply for the six-month Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice and be admitted to legal practice the same year that you graduate your Bachelor of Laws.
