Certificate in Furniture and Cabinetmaking Techniques

Program Overview

Humber’s Furniture and Cabinetmaking Techniques program provides you with the knowledge and skills to construct and build traditional furniture, as well as install basic cabinets using recognized trade practices. The program incorporates the use of various types of joinery and construction techniques using hand tools, portable power tools, stationary machines, as well as computer-based technologies, through a project-based approach. Once students complete this certificate, they can apply to continue their studies into Semester 3 of the Industrial Woodworking Diploma.

Graduates of the program will be able to produce shop drawings, calculate a list of materials, cut out and assemble basic cabinetry or furniture and also apply a finish.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the program, a graduate will:

  • Perform furniture and cabinetmaking activities safely to industry standards
  • Identify and compare joinery types for various kinds of furniture and cabinetmaking construction from shop drawings of common furniture and cabinet units
  • Interpret drawings for production planning and estimating
  • Select, maintain and operate hand tools, portable power tools and stationary machinery.
  • Select various grades of lumber and building materials.
  • Perform sanding and adhesive operations to industry standards.
  • Select and apply finishes and hardware used in manufacturing of furniture, cabinets and millwork.
  • Produce furniture, cabinets, and other architectural specialties including, millwork and mouldings to be installed in residential and commercial applications
  • Apply mathematical solutions for furniture and cabinetmaking applications
  • Draft documentation used to order materials, estimate job costs, and prepare invoices for furniture and cabinetmaking purposes.
  • Perform cabinet and furniture construction in an industrial setting
