Program Overview

The Master of Arts program in Child and Youth Care (CYC) intensively explores three thematic streams:

Clinical Child and Youth Care Practice
Management and Policy Development in Child and Youth Care
Child and Youth Care Approaches to Research.

This program focuses on the theoretical and practice-oriented approaches related to young people facing adversity in myriad contexts, and covers issues and themes that include trauma-informed care, resilience, life-space intervention, critical and anti-oppressive perspectives, and management and policy development in child and youth serving settings.

Through innovative pedagogy which incorporates an extensive focus on reflective practice, field learning opportunities, and the integration of social innovation and use of Self and Self in relational practice throughout the curriculum, the MA program teaches and promotes leadership in child and youth care, with an emphasis on children’s rights and the daily experiences of youth within institutional and community-based services.

The program is designed as a one-year (12 months) full time program, with a one term (Fall) residency requirement. The winter term and spring/summer sessions can be completed in class or online. Students must complete four required courses, two elective courses, a six-week, full-time placement, and a Major Research Paper (MRP). All required courses are offered during evenings.

A part-time option exists for students currently employed in the child and youth care sector on a full time basis. There are limited spots for this option, and admission requires an interview in addition to all other admission requirements.

Minimum Level of Education Required: Bachelor's Degree or equivalent from recognise university in related field.
a minimum grade point average (GPA) or equivalent of 3.00/4.33 (B) in the last two years of study:
- Undergraduate Child and Youth Care (CYC) degree from a Canadian university; or college of applied arts in Ontario; or
- Completion of an undergraduate degree in Family Studies, Child and Youth Studies from a Canadian university, plus 2,080 hours (one year, full-time) of direct service experience in a child and youth service setting. Note: Hours of direct service requirement is waived if student has a Child and Youth Worker/CYC diploma from an Ontario college; or
- Completion of an undergraduate degree in an allied discipline (Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, Early Childhood Studies, Cultural Studies, Gender Studies, Aboriginal Studies), plus 4,160 hours (two years, full-time) of direct service experience in a child and youth service setting. Note: Hours of direct service requirement is reduced to 2,080 hours (one year, fulltime) if student has a Child and Youth Worker/CYC diploma from an Ontario college.
Statement of interest covering the following three components (400-600 words each):
- Core concepts, issues and themes in CYC practice
- Your aspirations for leadership in CYC practice

International Student Winter Merit Scholarship (January 2025)

The International Student Winter Merit Scholarship is for international students. The students must be starting their first year of a full-time four-year undergraduate degree at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) in January 2025. It's for students who do well academically, volunteer, join clubs and show leadership qualities.

Please note: For those applying for admission in winter 2025, TMU has increased the scholarship value to $10,000. The recipient number potential has also increased to 20 students. This award is entrance-only and is non-renewable.

Terms and Conditions

To be eligible for consideration for the International Student Winter Merit Scholarship, applicants must:

Be international students with valid study permits by the start of the winter term (January 2025).
Maintain a full-time course load (80% or more of a full course load) upon enrolment.
Achieve a minimum 85% (or equivalent) final admission average.
Be enrolling in a post-secondary institution for the first time.
Be applying to a 4-year, full-time, undergraduate program.
Be applying for the fall International Secondary School Merit Scholarship or International Student Winter Merit Scholarship for the first time. Previous applicants will not be considered.

Guaranteed and Renewable Scholarships

Toronto Metropolitan University is pleased to recognize the academic achievements of the first-year class upon admission to the university with over $10 million designated for entrance scholarship support.

For Students Admitted for 2024-2025
International students (on a study visa) attending and completing studies at a Canadian secondary school, with final averages of 86% and higher, who meet the terms and conditions for scholarship, are guaranteed a renewable entrance scholarship according to the following values.

Terms and Conditions

To be eligible for consideration for the guaranteed and renewable scholarships, students must:

Be currently enrolled full-time in a Canadian secondary school (minimum of three Ontario grade 12 U/M courses or Canadian provincial equivalent within the 2023-2024 regular school year
Have been continuously enrolled full-time (no gaps in full-time attendance prior to the 2023-2024 regular school year)
Be enrolling in a post secondary institution for the first time
Have submitted the correct and complete application for admission to the program for which the scholarship is being granted by September 1, 2024
Canadian citizens, permanent residents of Canada, protected persons in Canada and international students are eligible for this award

President's Entrance Scholarships

The President's Entrance Scholarship is awarded to secondary school graduates who demonstrate academic accomplishment, leadership qualities, original thought and creative ability.

Twelve (12) recipients | $40,000 (total value) | $10,000 (annual amount) (renewable)
Recipients are reserved (costs not included) a bed in residence. This is limited to Pitman Hall single bedroom with shared hallway washroom or the International Living/Learning single bedroom with private washroom. Please visit the Housing and Residence Life website for more information about living on campus.

A minimum 90% final admission average is required for consideration. An applicant's average is calculated with their best six Grade 12 U/M courses, or their home country's equivalent.

This application will ask that you include the following:

An essay or project summary: this may be a piece of creative writing, or a summary of any creative project which you may have undertaken. It must reflect your capacity for original thought and creative ability (max 500 words).
Two (2) letters of reference:
1. academic reference letter that confirms your scholastic abilities. This reference may also speak to your leadership/creative endeavours.
2. reference letter should address your leadership/creative endeavours. It should not verify academic achievement.
Your leadership activities: you will indicate the leadership activities/positions that you have been involved in during your final two years in secondary school.

International Secondary School Merit Scholarship

The International Secondary School Merit Scholarship is for international students. The students must be starting their first year of a full-time four-year undergraduate degree at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU). It's for students who do well academically, volunteer, join clubs and show leadership qualities.

Please note: For those applying for admission in fall 2024, TMU has increased the scholarship value to $10,000. The recipient number potential has also increased to 40 students. This award is entrance-only and is non-renewable.

Key points to remember:

Must be an international student starting their first year of a full-time four-year undergraduate degree
Must have a final admission average of at least 85%, an A, or an equivalent

Student Visa For Canada
