Diploma in Computer and Network Support Technician (Co-op Optional)

Program Overview

Humber’s Computer and Network Support Technician diploma program prepares you for careers in Information and Communications Technology (ICT). You will build a foundation in electrical and logic circuits, and programming. You will also learn about the characteristics and performance enhancing features of personal computers and servers, hardware and operating systems (including Microsoft and different distributions of Linux) supported by virtualization tools and networks infrastructure. You will also learn about data centre technologies that support small- and medium-sized businesses. You will gain knowledge in supporting public, private, and hybrid cloud environments, and integrate cloud technologies and services.

The program will give you hands-on experience with various hardware platforms, protocols and services with a strong emphasis on network and data systems security. You will have access to state-of-the-art infrastructure to deploy and support Linux and Microsoft operating systems, and administer web servers and applications using different scripting environments. Our faculty collaborates very closely with industry partners to keep the program and curriculum current and relevant, so that you have the knowledge and skills to work in a cutting-edge high tech sector. You will learn from professors who are experienced industry professionals who have strong connections to companies in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).

Your group projects help you build essential customer service, and develop your interpersonal communications and teamwork skills. This, alongside your new comprehensive technical credentials, will give you a multi-dimensional background that employers want.

All students who are enrolled in Computer and Network Support Technician program are required to have access to mobile computing device, while on campus, having the following specifications:

  • Intel i7 (Quad core or higher)
  • Minimum 16 GB of RAM expandable to 32 GB (required in 2nd and 3rd semesters)
  • Minimum 250 GB storage space (SSD preferable)
  • Wireless 802.11 b/g/n/ac
  • Built-in Ethernet port (strongly recommended)
  • Long battery life (strongly recommended)
  • Minimum 1TB portable external hard drive (USB 3.0)

IT is the backbone of just about any business – the information and communications technology (ICT) sector itself contributes nearly $60 billion to the Canadian gross domestic product (GDP). Join this highly skilled and specialized workforce to analyze, set up, install, upgrade and maintain computer and network systems, and data and network security; train others; troubleshoot systems; and install and integrate software applications.

As a graduate of the program, you’ll be ready to work in technology, website management, customer service, information technology (IT) infrastructure and user support – all key areas in businesses and organizations. Graduates also work for not-for-profits and in government.
