Program Overview

Rule of law and good governance are critical to countries’ political stability and economic development. Strengthening responsible, representative, and responsive legal and governmental systems where they are most vulnerable is essential to protecting the fundamental rights of citizens, and is critical to resolving many of the great security, economic, and environmental challenges facing the world today.

The International Rule of Law and Security (IRLS) emphasis at the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law, developed in partnership with the McCain Institute for International Leadership, is an academic and experiential learning program designed to prepare students for jobs in the U.S. and overseas that promote justice and good governance, human rights, and national and international security. Based in Washington, D.C., and Phoenix, AZ, the IRLS program teaches students about the development of the rule of law and good governance in fragile and post-conflict states, and on evolving national and international security issues, including the threats posed by terrorism. IRLS prepares them for a range of legal, policy, and international development jobs in these fields.

Graduate students who are admitted with deficiencies must meet the deficiencies in order to become eligible for a scholarship award.

ASU-USA Pathways admission and progression scholarships

Admitted students are guaranteed $8,500 awarded for the 3-semester program, or $3,600 for 1-semester. Earned Pathways students are eligible for the scholarship in their first full Pathways session after they gain full admission. On successful completion of ASU-USA Pathways, students with GPA 3.25+ are awarded an ASU bachelor’s program tuition scholarship of $5,000, renewable annually.*

Kaplan International award

Students who do not meet the criteria for an ASU scholarship may be eligible for a Kaplan-funded partial scholarship (average $2,000) if they are unconditionally admitted to a bachelor’s or master’s degree. For undergraduates, the Kaplan award is given each semester until completion of their first spring semester at ASU. After that, if the student has no NAmU scholarship, the Kaplan award will be renewed* by ASU for 6 or 7 additional semesters. For graduates, Kaplan-funded awards are not renewable.

Work Permit

PGWP

Optional Practical Training or OPT is a period during which students, who have completed their degrees in the USA, are permitted to work for one year on a student visa by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). OPT allows students to work for up to 3 years and develop real-world skills to survive in the competitive jobs market.

It is temporary employment for a period of 12-months that is directly related to the major area of study of an F-1 student. Eligible students have the option to apply for OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies and/or after completing their academic studies.

A student can participate in three types of Optional Practical Training (OPT):

Pre-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment provided to F-1 students before completion of their course of study.
Post-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment available to F-1 students after completing their course of study.
24 Month STEM Extension: Students enrolled in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) courses can a 24-month extension after their initial Post-Completion OPT authorization.
