Become a music educator with an extensive depth of knowledge in music education, theory and history. Gain the skills and expertise to shape, form and teach music students. You'll be prepared for teaching careers at the K-12 and college levels, as well as for competitive doctorate programs.
Why This Program & What You'll Learn
Continue to build your love for teaching and music in this fully accredited music education graduate program. You'll formalize your own teaching philosophy and practices through music theory, history, research and pedagogy courses. You'll work with a graduate coordinator to customize your course work to best meet your goals as an educator.
Plus, you can also choose to concentrate in music conducting, composition or performance depending on your interests. And you'll conduct education research with the help of accomplished music educators. You'll present your research in public forums and will be encouraged to submit your work to state, regional and national conferences.
We also offer a limited number of graduate assistantships with a tuition waiver of up to 20 credit hours and a stipend of $10,300. If awarded, you may teach 100-level courses or assist directors of large ensembles. It offers great experience for students hoping to teach at the college level.
Our alumni have secured countless K-12 positions throughout Michigan and the country. Some have been recognized with prestigious fellowships, scholarships and awards, such as the Grammy Music Educator of the Year award. Others have pursued prestigious doctorate programs or found tenure-track positions in academia. Many are sought after as clinicians and adjudicators at regional, national and international events.
