Do you love studying and performing music? Do you dream of sharing this passion for music with others? In our music education program, you’ll grow as both a music teacher and performer. You'll be prepared for careers in K-12 teaching, competitive graduate schools and more.
Why This Program & What You'll Learn
Become a music teacher and a skilled performer by pursuing a major and minor in music education. You'll take courses in music performance, theory, history and teaching and have the opportunity to pursue Choral, General Music or Instrumental program tracks. Plus, you’ll gain certification to teach K-12 students — preparing you to share your love for music as soon as you graduate.
Our program has a long history of preparing music educators and a 100 percent placement rate for students seeking teaching positions.
As a student here at CMU, you can share your love of music with other students in the School of Music Residential College, where you'll live with other passionate student musicians and form lasting friendships and professional networks.
Located in a modern 119,000-square-foot facility, you'll also enjoy state-of-the-art resources like our 500-seat concert hall with a 61-rank Casavant organ, 100-seat recital hall, digital audio technology labs, recording facilities and a music resource center.
Our alumni have gone on to teach in elementary and secondary schools, universities and community arts education programs all over the country. Others have pursued competitive graduate programs at places like Indiana University, Jacobs School of Music, the University of Michigan and Arizona State University. From university band directors and professors to administrators in arts management and development, our alumni are leading the way.

Optional Practical Training or OPT is a period during which students, who have completed their degrees in the USA, are permitted to work for one year on a student visa by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). OPT allows students to work for up to 3 years and develop real-world skills to survive in the competitive jobs market.
It is temporary employment for a period of 12-months that is directly related to the major area of study of an F-1 student. Eligible students have the option to apply for OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies and/or after completing their academic studies.
