Program Overview

This concentration prepares students for a career in translation and interpreting, in which advanced-level proficiency in both Spanish and English is required. Students take a range of advanced courses on a variety of topics in order to acquire a diverse set of specialized vocabularies, in addition to specialized courses on the art and skill of translation and interpreting. the goal is to produce a truly proficient professional with cross-cultural and inter-cultural competency and specific translation and interpreting skills. this preparation affords the student a practical foundation for professional use of the spanish language, including advanced writing skills, formal presentation skills in Spanish, technical translation skills, and advanced cultural competency. all classes are conducted exclusively in Spanish, providing ample opportunity to practice language skills.

Scholarships Offered by Westfield State

First-Year & Transfer Students

Merit-based scholarships are for first-year and transfer students in the full-time Day Division who meet requirements not related to financial need and are awarded for superior academic achievement. Merit scholarships are based on the application for Admission. There are no separate scholarship applications. Merit-based scholarships are also available to out-of-state students.

Students are encouraged to apply for private scholarships as well.

The Westfield State Foundation, Inc. is pleased to announce over $300,000 is available in Foundation Scholarship Aid for the upcoming 2021-2022 academic year. Returning students are eligible to apply for additional Westfield scholarships. There are a few scholarships open to incoming freshmen.

Work Permit

PGWP

Optional Practical Training or OPT is a period during which students, who have completed their degrees in the USA, are permitted to work for one year on a student visa by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). OPT allows students to work for up to 3 years and develop real-world skills to survive in the competitive jobs market.

It is temporary employment for a period of 12-months that is directly related to the major area of study of an F-1 student. Eligible students have the option to apply for OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies and/or after completing their academic studies.

A student can participate in three types of Optional Practical Training (OPT):

Pre-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment provided to F-1 students before completion of their course of study.
Post-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment available to F-1 students after completing their course of study.
24 Month STEM Extension: Students enrolled in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) courses can a 24-month extension after their initial Post-Completion OPT authorization.
