Certificate in Primary Care Paramedic (formerly EMT)

Program Overview

Primary Care Paramedics (PCPs) are integral members of Emergency Medical Services and provide basic life support, medical and trauma care in health services and industrial settings. They may be the first to arrive on scene, they may be the only provider in remote areas, or they may work collaboratively in a team with other EMS/health care providers, first responders (i.e. Fire, Police) or community support agencies.

Duties vary depending on the employment setting but responsibilities for PCPs include patient assessment, treatment, stabilization, and transportation.

The PCP scope of practice competencies encompass knowledge and skills in the following areas: professional responsibilities, communication, health and safety, assessment and diagnostics, therapeutics, integration, transportation, health promotion and public safety.

The program is delivered using a blended format which offers students a unique alternative to traditional full-time, face to face, on-campus programs by providing multi-modal instruction in a computer-mediated delivery format so students can remain in their home communities for the majority of the training period. Students attend a total of 10 onsite training weeks in addition to the clinical and field placements during the 40 weeks of training.

Graduates are eligible to write the Provincial Registration Examination and become a registered practitioner with the Alberta College of Paramedics which is required to practice as a PCP in Alberta.

As part of the application process, applicants are required to attend the PCP Program Selection Day, April 24, 2019 at Portage College, Lac La Biche Campus.
