WHAT IS ENGINEERING DESIGN AND DRAFTING?

Engineering design is the process of developing a tool, machine, or component that meets a specific need. This process involves steps like:

  • Identifying the need or problem
  • Conducting research on existing solutions, target users or customers
  • Specifying product requirements and key features
  • Developing a solution or concept
  • Building a prototype
  • Testing the prototype
  • Producing documentation of the product (so it can be manufactured)

CAD technicians take the initial concept and specifications developed by the engineer, and turn them into drawings, blueprints, and instructions for assembly.

These are the skills you will learn in Herzing’s Computer-Aided-Design and Drafting program.

YOUR ROLE AS A CAD TECHNICIAN

Computer-aided design (CAD) technicians produce technical drawings for engineers, architects, and construction companies. They help bring all kinds of products to life, from small machines to entire buildings.

CAD technicians use specialized software to produce:

  • Blueprints
  • Exploded views
  • 3D models
  • Product animations and visualizations
  • Assembly guides
  • Materials lists
  • Front, side and rear elevations
  • Isometric views
  • Parametric modelling

These are the documents and guidelines manufacturers use to assemble the final product or structure. CAD technicians don’t develop the initial concept—but they play an essential role in making it real.
