Our Biomedical Science degree provides you with the essential skills required by professional biomedical scientists at our purpose designed Science Centre.

Our Biomedical Science students develop a huge range of practical and theoretical skills, preparing them for a future in many varied careers. There is never just one career path for Biomedical Science graduates. A degree in Biomedical Science can lead to exciting careers in health care, education, research and development, the life sciences industry, medical writing, technical sales and many other fields, as well as being an excellent spring board in to many post-graduate opportunities, including graduate medicine.

Registered Biomedical Scientists serve at the heart of our NHS, delivering high levels of patient care and contributing to an estimated 80% of all diagnoses. It is a rapidly developing, innovating, and rewarding career path. Our Biomedical Science degree is accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science, meaning our graduates meet the educational standards required when registering as a Biomedical Scientist.

All of our students will undertake 105 hours of guaranteed work placement, internship or volunteering opportunity contributing to your employability skills and preparing you for the world of work post-graduation. You will be fully supported in this process by our experienced team. Our Department works with local, regional and national employers alongside international university partners to provide students with placement and work experience opportunities both in the UK and abroad. When available, we will offer competitive places within NHS pathology departments that allow you to transfer on to the BSc (Hons) Applied Biomedical Science Award and complete the IBMS registration portfolio, making you eligible to apply for Health and Care Professions Council registration as a Biomedical Scientist upon graduation.

This programme has been accredited by the Royal Society of Biology and the Institute of Biomedical Science following an independent and rigorous assessment. Accredited degree programmes contain an academic foundation in biological knowledge and key skills, and prepare graduates to address the needs of employers. The accreditation criteria require evidence that graduates from accredited programmes meet defined sets of learning outcomes, including subject knowledge, technical ability and transferable skills.

If you do not meet our direct entry requirements for degree level study, then a BSc (Hons) with a Foundation Year is available. You’ll study your first year at City of Stoke-on-Trent Sixth Form College and on successful completion join the BSc (Hons) course at the Stoke-on-Trent university campus. High levels of tutor support and guidance will prepare you for degree level study. This route is useful if you have only studied sciences up to GCSE level or have had a break in your studies.
