Master of Arts in Literature, Culture and Society

Program Overview

A Master's degree in Literature, Culture and Society will give you an interdisciplinary understanding of literature and related representational forms. You'll interrogate the intricate marriage between literary, theatrical, artistic, and curatorial representations, and their social, political and cultural backdrops

Throughout the degree you'll explore the interconnections between representations and contexts from a range of diverse perspectives. This includes concepts such as:

  • Race
  • Religion
  • Gender
  • Nationhood
  • Place

The degree focusses on the composition and reception of diverse narrative forms, including:

  • Novels
  • Poetry
  • Theatre
  • Political satire
  • Comic strips
  • Historical fiction
  • Museum exhibitions

You'll explore the motivation behind the original narrative formation, and how it may be re-appropriated by new readers and audiences when viewed through an alternative cultural lens.

The cross-disciplinary approach of the course means that graduates from across the humanities, especially English, History and Liberal Arts, would be well suited to study the degree.
