Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Digital Media Development: 3D Environments (Game and Heritage)

Program Overview

  • Master the creation of new worlds that users become totally immersed in
  • Join a course that aims to help you explore, challenge and extend your limits, enabling you to achieve the most exciting outcomes possible
  • Take advantage of cutting-edge technology such as 3D printers, motion capture software and virtual reality headsets in our fully equipped Digital Design Studio
  • Complete professional commercial work on client-based projects to build your online portfolio throughout your degree
  • Focus on teamwork and collaboration, mimicking industry practice and increasing your employability

3D environments are what make virtual reality the powerful immersive experience it is. Whether it be a fantasy landscape that opens up inside someone’s living room or a past world brought to life in a museum, taking an initial vision and seeing it through to a complete 3D environment makes you, literally, a creator of new worlds.

Our Digital Media Development: 3D Environments course offers you the chance to become a developer of these virtual worlds for the growing gaming, heritage and education industries. And with an open mind and powerful tools at your disposal there has never been a more exciting time to study this rich and interactive area of design and creative technology.

Year 1 gives you a solid grounding in the core principles of communication, 3D modelling and the integration of digital media among other topics. In addition, you focus on design and development of websites, apps, games, VR/AR, 3D visualisation and the principles of interactivity. Modules include 3D Modelling Principles, World Building and Rendering & Animation.

In Year 2, you develop practice in 3D modelling, scene design, animation, game production, 3D environments for game or heritage, VR/AR content and production solutions for specific media platforms. You have the chance to work on commercial projects for real clients, increasing your future employability.

In Year 3, you continue in your specialist area while studying business practice within the creative digital media industry. You are required to undertake two major negotiated projects, at least one of which is normally expected to be conducted with an industry partner as a placement. This provides you with a fully interactive online portfolio of work to impress future employers.

By the end of the programme you will be a highly skilled technologist, capable of receiving design ideas to develop and improve through to a finished and accomplished product.
