Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Computer Systems and Networks with Foundation Year (Sandwich Year)

Program Overview

  • Learn from a specialist team of research-active academics who work at the forefront of the field
  • Access a wide range of specialist software and tools including dedicated Cyber Security and Forensics, Networking and Software Development laboratories in a state-of-the-art new development
  • Set yourself up to flourish in your degree and beyond with our Foundation Year

Our three year degree provides in-depth knowledge and skills in computer networking, including routing and switching, network security, data centres and the cloud. You will learn the necessary skills to design and manage, state-of-the-art enterprise networks.

A Foundation Year is the perfect way to boost your academic skills, build your confidence and develop your wider subject knowledge so you can succeed at Winchester. This course offers an extra year of study at the start (Year 0) which leads onto a full degree programme (Years 1, 2 and 3).

A Foundation Year is ideal if you are returning to education after a break; haven’t quite achieved the entry qualifications required; are wanting more support during the transition to studying at university; or are unsure about which subject you wish to pursue.

In Year 0, you will study a set of modules from across the Faculty of Business, Law and Digital Technologies which are designed to develop your academic and practical skills. This broader focus in your first year introduces you to studying at university level and provides you with a better understanding of Computer Networks and Systems and related subjects.

In Year 1 you will develop fundamental core knowledge in networks and information systems. You will engage with underpinning principles of computing and networking technologies together with relevant areas of programming, mathematics, statistics and business. You will build practical experience within a dedicated Cisco networking lab which you will continue in your second year. Legal and regulatory frameworks are explored together with developing your personal and professional skills.

In Year 2 you will engage and deepen your understanding of issues related to networking and relevant supporting technologies including security and databases. There is a strong focus on employability and you will develop an in-depth understanding of web and mobile application development. The Integrated Project module incorporates your knowledge learned in Year 1 and enables you to design, develop and evaluate a security application as part of a team.

An optional Placement Year will enhance your employability, business understanding and professional skills through a sandwich placement year.
