Program Overview

Do you want to turn your love for sport into an academic qualification and study for a sports-related honours degree here at Solent University? Leading directly on to our highly-regarded sports degrees, the one year foundation programme will equip you with the skills you’ll need to progress on to the full BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Science degree.

Studying the sport foundation year could give students an opportunity to extend previous experience gained, or provide a route back into education. The course will help develop the key academic skills required to make the transition to studying a the full BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Science undergraduate degree.

Endorsed by the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES), the sport and exercise science degree is founded upon the underlying principles of physiology, psychology and biomechanics. The course combines these scientific principles with highly practical skills, helping to prepare you for a career in the sport and exercise science industry.

Modules and assessments have been created to develop key employability skills such as communicating scientific results; teaching and developing specific skills with athletes; and planning, organising and conducting research projects. To complement your degree studies, you’ll be encouraged to prepare for BASES and UK Strength and Conditioning Association (UKSCA) professional accreditation.

To help prepare you for a career in the sports industry, an applied and hands-on approach is encouraged. Through professional placements and applied practice you will gain first-hand experience of working with teams and athletes in a high-performance environment. With support and mentoring from the course team, past students have provided sport science support to Premiership rugby and football players, Olympic athletes, and national teams.

Throughout your degree you’ll have access to a range of professional facilities such as our specialist BASES-accredited laboratories (physiology, biomechanics and psychology), a £28m sports complex, the award-winning Spark teaching building and a 24-hour library service.
