The interdisciplinary approach that is particular to our MA allows you to open up to a wide range of disciplines and employment sectors.

At the end of your studies you will have a degree that covers the two major disciplines of history and politics, and, most crucially, it will testify to your capacity to be a flexible learner across different fields of research.

Our graduates are particularly well equipped to follow career paths in sectors that deal with violent conflicts, their consequences and resolution, such as a variety of non-governmental organisations (NGOs), particular sections of the civil service, and international bodies.

More broadly our degree opens up to sectors that value critical research skills and a good knowledge of modern history and politics, such as media, journalism, law, politics, government, museums, archives, and publishing.

Many of our students go on to teach in primary and further education or they continue their postgraduate studies doing doctorates.

About these scholarships

We offer the following scholarships for international masters-level students from the below regions:

• Vice-Chancellor Africa postgraduate scholarship
• Vice-Chancellor MENA and Turkey postgraduate scholarship
• Vice-Chancellor LATAM postgraduate scholarship
• New for September 2025: Vice-Chancellor EU postgraduate scholarship

These scholarships are open to students studying within any of our academic schools, excluding Brighton and Sussex Medical School. 

Scholarships are awarded as a £2,000 reduction on tuition fees for the first year of study, which is automatically deducted after enrolment to students that meet the eligibility criteria.

There are various options through which a student can get a post study work visa in the UK. 
Tier 1 Graduate Entrepreneur Visa for the graduates with a genuine and credible business idea. 
Tier 2 (General) is the leading immigration visa to work in the UK.
Tier 4 Doctorate Extension Scheme is for students who have completed their Ph.D. and is valid for 12 months for them to work, look for work or set up a business. 
Tier 5 Youth Mobility is for individuals of certain countries like Australia, Canada, Japan, Monaco, Hong Kong, South Korea, Taiwan, and New Zealand aged between 18 -30 who wish to move to the UK. 
Tier 5 GAE is for individuals who want to come to the UK for work experience, training, research or a fellowship. 
UK Ancestry is for individuals who are a citizen of a commonwealth and plan to work in the UK and have a grandparent who was born in the UK.
