Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Human Geography with Year in Professional Practice

Program Overview

You can be one of the next generation of geographers preparing to address the fast-changing, interrelated challenges facing our modern world. Expand your theoretical knowledge and develop practical field, research, and work-related skills. Extend beyond the traditional foundations of Geography and address urgent and complex social and environmental issues including human-led climate change and biodiversity loss. Examine why the world is changing so quickly and how these changes affect the environment, cultures and economies at local, national and global levels.

This course equips you with the skills required for a career in business, government agencies, sustainability, NGOs, education, and development. You'll learn skills including Geographic Information Systems (GIS), research design, project management and data analysis.

Our extensive range of UK and overseas field trips take advantage of the UK’s rich and varied landscapes, as well as our own beautiful green and wooded campus. Fieldwork helps you deeply understand and analyse how human actions have impacted our landscape and how it has been used and misused over time.

You can also study complimentary modules on how to conserve our environment from our sister degree in Ecology and Conservation. Kent is an epicentre of rewilding efforts in the UK, and we take advantage of our proximity to reintroduction projects including the Bison in Blean woods, just a stone’s throw from our campus.

The year in professional practice is a wonderful opportunity to undertake a work placement at home or abroad. Previous placements have included consultancy for Afzelia Limited, Zambia; surveying with the Danau Girang Field Centre, Borneo; project co-ordination for the Uganda Conservation Foundation; and project work for the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification.
