Program Overview

Why study Drama and Film at Kent?

  • Your degree, your way: from puppetry to stand-up comedy, film culture to screenwriting and sound, we blend practical work with academic study, with elective modules from both disciplines, enabling you to tailor the course to your interests.
  • Access fantastic facilities: our specialist spaces include a fully equipped professional theatre, a scenic workshop space for set and props, rehearsal studios, Mac Pro editing suites, chroma-key green screen and black serge cycloramas and much more!
  • Explore special resources: Our library houses over 150 archival collections of international interest, including historical theatre and performance material from pantomime, melodrama and variety, as well as the British Stand-Up Comedy Archive.
  • Get career ready: Kent has excellent links with arts organisations and theatres as well as film bodies, including the British Film Institute and Arts Council England. We offer opportunities for work placements and our students can apply for the Graduate Theatre Company Scheme, which funds drama project work for 18 months after you finish your studies with us.
  • Join our community: Our Jarman Building, the centre of the School of Arts, is a creative hub for Drama, Film, Media Studies and Art History students, where you can engage in activities and societies including our television and radio station and magazine.

What you'll study
You begin with an introduction to theories of performance studies and a wide range of theatre practices that also includes practical workshops. In addition, you are introduced to the language of film and its history, including framing, sound, editing and lighting. During all stages of your study, you have a wide range of modules to choose from, covering everything from documentary cinema and location scouting to musical theatre and Shakespeare.

In your final year, you have the opportunity to complete an independent research or practice-based project on a subject of your choice. This allows you to focus on a topic you are particularly passionate about.
